Red goldenrod aphids (Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum) feed on an Early Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides). Early-season aphids are generally wingless and don’t lay eggs; instead, they live-birth female nymphs (as seen here), who may also be already pregnant - without male involvement.
Winged females usually develop later in the season, making it easier for them to travel to new plants. In addition, autumn brings on a phase of sexual reproduction, which produces eggs that survive the winter. A delicate and fragrant cluster of Lily of the valley flowers (Convallaria majalis) blooms among their graceful leaves.
Colorful clusters of Golden oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) grow on a decaying tree trunk.
A close-up look (5x in-camera) at a dandelion flower (Taraxacum officinale) shows the curled pollen-collecting stigmas with the corollas (petals) in the background.
