Checking out the new neighbor

This year marks the first time I've seen a Collared dove - also called a Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto) - in our area. This one (on the right) just showed up under our bird feeder a few days ago. The Mourning dove (on the left - which we're all used to), seems to be just as curious about the newcomer as I was. Though I didn't see it grabbing the bird book to figure out what it was. It just watched for awhile, then went back to eating.

With a little reading (thank you, Wikipedia), I found out that the collared dove is native to Eurasia (imagine that!) and was introduced into the Americas in 1974, when 50 escaped captivity in the Bahamas. Since then, it has done a bang-up job of spreading throughout North America and Mexico.

So, I expect they're here to stay - especially since I saw two of them under the feeder today!

Have you seen any around, yet?

Dancing Trees

I've always been drawn by the play of the wind - and intrigued with ways to capture that sense of motion in a photograph.

While I was sitting at the picture window during a recent summer storm, I watched this tree swaying in the wind. The motion captivated me; I was drawn out, I grabbed the camera and went out to join in the dance.

These images are just a couple from that play date. But, they're sure getting me thinking of more ideas!

What do you think?

Graceful Lily of the Valley

Graceful arching sprigs of Lily of the Valley flowers amidst their verdant green leaves

It has been a busy Spring, and I've been preoccupied. But, God bent my ear, which is a good thing... As I was walking by our patch of Lily of the Valley a few days ago, they were calling to me so loudly that I just had to stop and spend some time with them!

Once I was down low among the flowers, I was pleasantly surprised to see several of them line up in a gracefully swaying arch, drawing me even deeper into the verdant little patch.

It's good to keep an eye - and an ear - open for the quiet little things.

Never say there is nothing beautiful in the world anymore.

There is always something to make you wonder in the shape of a tree, the trembling of a leaf.
